My name is Adrienne Bridgewater. I attended my first birth doula workshop in June 2002. During introductions, the trainer asked why each person was in attendance. My response: “I’m addicted to pregnancy.” I know this might sound a little strange, but for as long as I can remember I have always had a healthy fascination with pregnancy. I don’t believe I find anything more intriguing than the female body and pregnancy journey, from conception to birth. I continue to be in awe of the abilities of the female body.
My journey to where I am now has been filled with twists and turns. But at the end of the road, I realized that my true purpose is to be with women during this precious time in their lives.
My philosophy as a doula is to support the woman and family throughout her pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period. I do not push my opinions; I provide the necessary education to help women and their families make informed decisions. My job is to help YOU have the most positive birth experience possible, without judgment regarding decisions that are made. These are intimate moments in a woman’s life and you deserve to have a voice in your care and the care of your baby. I take my cues from you, the MOTHER. I will do everything I can to help you stick to your birth plan but will help you talk through changing that plan, if necessary. Remember, you have a birth plan but birth has a plan of its' own.
A little about me: I am 35 and married, 4-years to my husband, Marcel. We have a wonderful son who was born at the Bryn Mawr Birth Center in Bryn Mawr, PA. Please take a moment to read my birth story. I graduated from Haverford College in 1998, and started a nurse-midwifery program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. I did not complete the program, but truly believe that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I have worked in the field of reproductive health since I was a junior in college. I am trained to provide pregnancy counseling, HIV information and counseling (during pregnancy too) and STD & STI information and counseling.
I am always happy to answer any questions you may have about my experiences.
